Subjective Editions

Subjective Editions is a publishing initiative that develops and disseminates bottom-up engaged mapping publications. An expanding series of subjective atlases is being made in collaboration with local communities. These volumes map out a country, region or geopolitical entity in a personal way by the inhabitants themselves.

During several workshops artists, designers, photographers and architects are invited to map their country, environment or social concerns from their own perspective. They capture their engagement in maps, graphs, inventories, flags or drawings. Personal involvement is the starting point to produce human, unconventional and just images.  Each work stems from involvement with the subjects and takes an engaged, critical and transparent position, not a neutral or so-called objective one.

We work on the basis of invitations by local partners with who we co-develop a mapping trajectory, supported by collaborating institutes and a combination of external funding and pre-sales of the atlases. In close collaboration we edit the publication and coordinate the printing, publishing and distribution proces.

Subjective Editions is a proposition for a creative mentality that is politically engaged, socially sensitive, collaborative in nature and un-disciplinary in its method.

Together with Annelys de Vet (founder and artistic director) and others involved in the development of this publishing platform, PresentFuture is responsible for the organization’s funding and for the search for funding of each of the specific atlas projects. We assist in the set-up of new initiatives and in the structural organization and management of them. We co-develop and execute communication, press and public relations strategies. We take care of stock management, the distribution to bookshops and the sales to individuals through the website, social media and third-party webshop platforms.
