Buda Arts Island, Kortrijk (BE)

The assignment for PresentFuture existed in creating a new identity for the Buda Island as a place for art and creation through the reconstruction of the public domain, the development of an adapted cultural infrastructure and developing complementary private initiatives.

In 2003, with the support of the Flemish government, the Buda arts island urban renewal project was launched. The Buda Island is transformed into an important cultural place in the city and the region with the Budascoop, the Tack Tower and the Buda arts factory. For example, the old Pentascoop cinema complex was converted into an arts center with film and theater halls, production and studio spaces and associated administration. The headquarters of the Buda Arts Center is also located on the island.

Public partners: City of Kortrijk, AGB City Development Company Kortrijk, vzw Buda, Flemish government, Municipal museums and Europe Interreg.

Within the context of this urban renewal project, we developed the operational strategy for this new artistic organization. We brought together four cultural player and transformed them into one new arts initiative: Buda Arts Centre. PresentFuture took the lead in this urban transformation process and in the development of the content of the new artistic program. We put together a team of art professionals to run the new arts center and with whom we developed the communication strategy and the audience development program.
